It is one of the world's most beautiful spectacular and breathtaking coast lines overhanging the sea: from Sorrento to Salerno on stunning roads along 60 km you see Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Minori, Maiori, Conca dei Marini, Cetara, Vietri sul mare e Salerno.
Along the way you can find the Emerald grotto, and many china shops.
Positano is a small town, full of VIPs, built on the rocks facing the sea. It is a place of fashion, known all over the world for luxurious Hotels, such as Hotel Sirenuse, and Hotel San Pietro, about which Barbara Streisand said "the world’s most beautiful Hotel”.
Leaving Amalfi, uphill, for about 6 Km, you reach Ravello. Here Wagner composed the second part of the 'Parsifal' and Byron, found inspiration also. In Ravello at Villa Rufolo, annually from June to September, there are concerts in honour of Wagner. Going up, through a narrow street, you get to Villa Cimbrone, overlooking the bay of Salerno. It is also worth visiting the cathedral, and the crypt.
More than 1000 years ago in Italy, there were the so called 'four maritime Republics'. The four republics were represented by Pisa, Genoa, Venice and Amalfi.
Amalfi is the home town of Flavio Gioia who discovered the properties of magnetic field and built the first compass, so in the main square you can see a statue representing the inventor. The cathedral of Saint Andrea, is a masterpiece of Byzantine art.
